History for the Cougar Country Drive-In Nadirs,
A Competitive League Intramural Men's Softball Team.

The Cougar Country Drive-In Nadirs formed as a team in the Fall of 1996. They were originally known simply as Pent House. In the Spring of 1997 the name was changed to the Gamblers. Fall of 1997 saw their name change again to the Procrustean Nadirs (pro-krust-ian nay-ders). The following season they dropped Procrustean and were known as the Nadirs. In 1999 they added Valley Road to the name and became the Valley Road Nadirs. In the Spring of 2001 the team did not form. That was the only time since Fall 1996 they did not play together. In the Fall of 2002 they were back together and playing. In Fall 03 they changed their name to Nacho Man Nadirs. The Fall of 04 saw the name changed to Darth Nadirs. One season later the name was changed again to Merdiverous Sycophantic Nadirs meaning brown-nosing, dung-eating cellar dwellers . In Fall 06 we changed the name to the current name of Cougar Country Nadirs.

Our first season as a team was pretty lousy. We did not make the play-offs (our one and only year of not making the play-offs). We were learning to play with each other and took no time to practice.

Our second season turned out much better. It was the Spring of 1997 and we made it into the Intramural Top Ten. It was our first year in the Top Ten, and the only time we ever have made the Top Ten in the Spring. That season we had 10 guys batting .500 or better. 4 guys with a slugging percent of 1.000 or better. As a team we had a .907 slugging percent and .593 batting average. Aaron Vaughn lead the team with a .789 batting average and Brandon Kunz lead the team with 1.769 slugging percent. During the regular season Brandon Kunz had a slugging percent of 2.278 with 6 homeruns, 3 triples, 3 doubles and 2 singles in 18 plate appearances.

From 1996 to 2000 three of the original team members remained: Brandon Kunz, Ryan Gamble, and Scotty Anderson, the team founder. Fall of 2000 Kunz graduated and moved on. Gamble and Anderson are the last to original members.

Brandon Kunz was by far the best player who stepped on the field for the Valley Road Nadirs. His numbers include: better than 1.500 Slugging Percentage, over a .700 batting average, he leads the team with more than 50 career homeruns. His fielding skills were well above average. He was a lefty who started every game at Short Stop until we picked up Chris Deerwester. Deerwester's skills at Short Stop were as good as Kunzs'. We moved Kunz to Left Center field where he excelled. With his above average speed and he ran down balls that should have dropped for extra base hits. He had a cannon for an arm and could easily throw the ball to the catcher while he was still in the middle to deep outfield. He was a team leader. When the going got tough people looked to Kunz to lead the way to victory. He is irreplaceable.

Following Kunz in graduation and leaving the team were several other players. We lost Devin Simons - 7 seasons, Skyler Gemar - 5 seasons, Pete Salamone - 5 seasons, Shawn Plank - 4 seasons, Ted Ryan - 2 seasons, John Gollnick - 2 seasons, Jer Mauck - 1 season, and Dan Heverling - 1 season. Losing 9 players at one time with the experience level these guys had was devastating. This left us with 3 returning players, and 1 player, Dan Leatzow who returned from an academic leave. We had to scout and sign almost a full team. After a try out session, we found several quality players. More than expected. We picked up 9 new guys Danny Bottenus, Donavon Davis, Garrett Davis, Mike Massoth, Aaron Olhsen, David Perkins, Dan Uskoski, Jason Reed, Brett Yaw. After just one season these guys are playing together like champs. We won the first ever IM Sportsmanship award.

Going into the Spring 2002 season we lost a few players however, we received quality replacements for them. With a solid core the Valley Road Nadirs looked ready to compete for the Championship.

The Spring 2002 season started with a shocking surprise. The Chickenheads, the most dominant team in the current IM era did not form. This marks the first time in over 20 years the Chickenheads were not on the field. I used the Chickenheads to gauge how well the Valley Road Nadirs were doing.

We picked up Ron Morgan, Matt Mayhew and Trent Allen. Each of them were great additions to the team they fit in really well, and helped the team excel. John Gollnick returned to the team as well.

The team lost the first game to Morning Wood. Then won the next 5 games. In the playoff we were the number two seed in the Men Competitive league bracket. We won the first game 20 to 14. The next game we mounted a 6th inning comeback to win by two runs to advance to the Championship round. We faced the Master Batters, the team former Valley Road Nadir, Brett Yaw plays for. The final outcome of the game was not what any of us had hoped for, however, that was the first Valley Road Nadir team to make it to the Championship round. It is only the second Valley Road Nadir's have landed in the Top Ten in the Spring Season.

Chris Deerwester, our phenomenal Short Stop came back from his final season, however due to living in Spokane he was not able to make it to all the games. We will miss him in the dugout and on the field. Trent Allen left WSU so we will miss his talent in the outfield. The rest of the team did return and we were looking for another great Fall season. However that dream was shattered early. We had the worst Fall season in 5 years for the Valley Road Nadirs. On the field we were strong as usual, however the bats were not there. We did not string hits together. We did not do the basic things to allow us to get runs on the board. Ending the Season in a must win situation, we had our backs against the wall, and ended up losing. Putting the Valley Road Nadirs on the sidelines for the first time in Fall-Ball since Fall 1996.

With the loss of Chris Deerwester and Mike Massoth, the short-stop position will see only its third regular starter in that position. Following in the footsteps of Brandon Kunz and Chris Deerwester, Garrett Davis has big shoes to fill, but he has proven himself a quality player at 3rd base for several seasons. Mike Massoth who anchored the Left-Center position will be replaced by Matt Mayhew. Brett Yaw came back as a Valley Road Nadir in the Fall of 02. He plays Left Field in the absence of Ron Morgan. The Nadirs, as always, have a large amount of talent.

With or without talent, as of late the Valley Road Nadirs always find ways to lose games. Mainly by not hitting the ball. We have held every opponent to 10 runs or less, and we can not beat them because we are scoring less than 10 runs a game. This team has the talent to win, but it is not doing so. We are going to work on hitting for next Fall. Sitting on the fence two straight seasons during the play off's really sucks. The team will not do that anymore. On the positive side, Garrett Davis played Short Stop with great skill and did it very well. Aaron Ohlsen in his first full season at Third was very solid. There is no doubt the team has talent. We need to tap into that talent better and start to win a few games.

Coming into another season with the team's core still intact, things were looking like there could be some break through's. First off Scotty decided to make some changes from the top down. Aside from the normal softball games the team will have social gatherings as well. Hopefully this will make team chemistry stronger. Scotty is no longer the field manager. He gave that job to both Dan Uskoski and Ron Morgan. Scotty's role will now be as general manager. He will scout talent, get the team signed up and meeting requirements. He will be the point of contact for the team. Dan and Ron are captains for the infield and outfield respectively. They will also set the line ups, decide who plays where and when.

So, with about a week before the first practice Garrett Davis informed Scotty that Keito will not be able to play due to outside requirements, and Garrett himself will leave the team to play with his friends. He wished us luck. Normally Short Stop is one of the positions that rarely changes on the team. Thankfully we have two fine short stops in Ron Morgan and Brett Yaw both of whom will excel, and we will not miss a beat at short stop.

In the off season we picked up several guys. Phil Gruen is a PhD from UC Berkley. He is a third baseman and an outfielder. Steve Hansen, who plays summer ball with Dan and Scotty, will join up. He is a second baseman and an outfielder. Jer Mauck is back in town and back with the Nadirs. He played with the Valley Road Nadirs in Fall 2000. Finally Mark Konty was added. He will be an outfielder and a backup infielder.

This season the team will be getting a team jersey and numbers. A fellow player on the My Office Summer team is the owner of Nacho Man. He will be supplying us with t-shirts at a highly reduced cost. Because of our new sponsorship we will again change our name. We are no longer the Valley Road Nadirs. We are the Nacho Man Nadirs. This change will also find itself on the website as our team color will no longer be green. The next team colors are black and yellow.

After making the playoff's for the first time in a few season's, the team still was not satisfied. You can't hit as poorly as we did and expect to go far. With some better hitting we may have gone farther in the playoff's. We lost by three runs to the team which ended up being the Fall Champions. We have the talent, we need to get the sticks to catch up. One off season acquisition is the addition of Richard Hesner. He will bring much needed speed to the team, plus with a good glove it is expected that our defense will only get better.

We also got Renaldo Alexander, Craig Peterson, and Bryce Cuello. Renaldo has a golden glove and is a threat up the middle in left-center field. Craig is coming out of retirement to play ball again. He has about 20 years of experience under his belt. Bryce will bring speed and utility to the team being able to play in several positions.

This season was like many we have had in the recent years. One game our bats are on fire and the next they will not hit anything. We started the season with a game against the Long Balls. That is the team Garrett Davis went to play with. We beat them in the pre-season and lost to them in the post season. The difference being the way we hit the ball. We went 3-3 on the season and went to the play-offs playing against a team that beat us in the regular season by a score of 4 to 3. That play-off game was one of beauty. The Nadirs defense was great and the bats were hot. We won 10-0. They only had one guy left on base the whole game and no one got safely to second base. We only faced one batter over the minimum. The next game we were crushed. Even if we had been hitting well, it would have taken everything we had to keep pace. We lost the game and ended the play-offs 1-1 and the season record was 4-4.

Starting the Fall 2004 season we picked up a couple guys from the My Office Bar & Grill team to fill in for some of the positions we lost. This was not to be a good year for the re-named Darth Nadirs. Scotty E-mailed the IM softball coordinator on several occasions to make sure the first two games would get rescheduled. With the Cougar Football team playing in Seattle there were going to be several players out of town who would not be back in time for the game. The coordinator assured him several times it would get taken care of. It was not. The team tried to play with who was in town. We only got eight people there and lost the games. That put us in a hole for the rest of the season. It was a hole, even with the talent of people like Curtis Cruz and Phil Gruen, we were not able to come back from. We were in a position of needing to have a .750 winning percentage for the remainder of the season. We were unable to do so, and that caused us to miss the play-offs.

After such a disappointing run last season we were looking to bounce back. We started by renaming the team. Many ideas were thrown around including Synvict Nadirs meaning "Together we Conquer". The other idea while had the most team support was Merdiverous Sycophantic Nadirs meaning "brown-nosing, dung-eating cellar dwellers". We had eight returning players including the Rookie of the Year Fall 2004 - Ben Wilmarth. Ben brought in Jory Feider and Ryan Rudolph. Richard's friend Trent Clancy joined the team. We had one person come to us from the free-agent list. Dave Meddish a 20-year softball veteran brings experience to the team.

The winter of 2005 made the conditions in February and March good for practicing. The team got together a couple times to work off the winter-rust and get excited about the up coming year. Going into the start of the season the team is sitting with twelve quality players and another power-hitter in Jory.

This season we had two forfeits which gave us two wins. We beat one team, Below Me. We lost the three other games we were in. So we made the playoffs. In the first game of the playoffs we went to work right away against the only team we had beaten, Below Me. We scored four runs right away. Scotty Anderson had a stand up triple.

In their half of the first inning they scored two runs. We had the lead going into the bottom of the third inning when they scored four runs. There was a ball that Ben Wilmarth ran down in the outfield. It appeared that the ball was out of play when he touched it. But the umpire said it was fair. So the ball was thrown in and people were arguing with the umpire and not making the play. They scored an extra run because of that.

Both teams were scoreless in the forth. In the fifth, they scored another run and were ahead of us seven to four. We were in the top of the sixth inning. That is the last inning of an Intramural game. We needed three runs after having been held scoreless for four straight innings. We went out there and finally started to hit a little bit. We scored two runs on a hit by Ryan Gamble, and then they threw the ball out of play allowing one more run to come in. We tied it up. Then we made the final out. They went up in the sixth and we held them scoreless. So it was off to extra innings.

During the game while Bryce Cuello was playing second base he ran with his back to the infield to make a juggling catch of a ball. It was great. Later Ryan Gamble, while at second, did a long run and caught one over his head. We get through the seventh and eighth inning scoreless.

In the top of the ninth, we finally broke it open with two runs. They took their at bat and scored one with an out. Then they had two on base with two out. Ryan Rudolph was playing right field. The other outfielders were all playing in left field, because we had a rover going.

The ball was driven deep to right-center. Ryan Rudolph got on his horse and ran like crazy. His back was to the infield the whole time. With two outs the baserunners were running for home. If the ball got on the ground there would have been no time for a play at home. They would win the game and eliminate us from the playoffs. Then with his back to the infield Ryan Rudolph made a diving catch and caught the ball! The team cheering and ran to right-field to meet up with him and give him props. It was in many ways like winning the whole thing for us. We battled and we battled. We made some good defensive plays and finally the game was won with a catch that would have been on ESPN had it been recorded.

We went on to lose the next game to the LongBalls, but we had our championship in that game where we did not give up. Following the loss, we also lost three players due to graduation. Aaron Ohlsen, who is tied for the forth highest number of seasons played, is leaving along with Richard Hesner after three seasons and Trent Clancy after one season. A few weeks after the season ended we got word that Mark Konty, after 4 seasons, is moving to Auburn University and will be leaving as well.

In the Fall of 2005 a new team joined the competitive league, they are along the same line as the Chickenheads except they are younger and more dangerous. We would go on to face them in the playoffs. We played them tighter than most teams throughout the season. We made some costly errors that allowed them to keep their inning alive. That spelled our doom. We picked up a couple good players to include Eric Biesen who is a presence in both the outfield and at the plate. Ryan "The Beav" Nakano is a solid shortstop who earned a gold glove in his first season with us.

Coming into the Spring of 2006 we lost Ben Wilmarth to a Turf Management team. With him went Chad Cleveland and Jory Feider. Jory was our man in the short outfield playing rover. Chad was a rookie. We had two pick-ups Brad Fritzke who should make himself known and Rory Prunella who I hope to make into a pitcher as well as an outfielder.

The season went well over all for the Merdiverous Sycophantic Nadirs. We went 3-2-1 and in the regular season with a tie coming to a team we would later beat in the post-season to get to the championship game. Against the Turf Club team there was a grudge match. It was a friendly one, but it meant everything. Ben "The Traitor" Wilmarth wanted to hit a homerun off of Scotty Anderson. Dave Meddish was started as the pitcher so The Traitor would think he would not face Anderosn. When The Traitor came to the plate Anderson took over as pitcher and proceeded to keep The Traitor for getting even a basehit. In his first at bat, The Traitor had a foul-out strike out. The Nadirs went on to win that game.

In the playoffs the Nadirs had timely hitting that carried them to the championship game, however their hitting and luck would end there. Due to player shortages in the playoffs Blake Pritchett was picked up to play. He hit the ball well and helped get the team to the championship game. The Nadirs were out hit in the game and ended up losing their bid for league champions.

The Fall 2006 team saw a lot of changes. First yet another name change. We got Cougar Country Drive-In to sponsor the team. That also caused the team colors to go through another color change. We are now Crimson and Grey, just like the Cougs! Ryan 'The Beav' Nakano, Ryan Rudolph, and Eric Biesen graduated from WSU and moved on, Rory Prunella left WSU to attend a school closer to home. We picked up Joe Fairbanks from the My Office Summer team, Nick Barry from the Tax Dodgers Summer team, Ben "The Traitor" Wilmarth came back from the Turf Club Team. We also picked up Jake Taylor and Justin Amoruso from the free-agents list.

We beat A Bunch of Old Men, their first loss in their history. That was nice, but it happened during the regular season. So when we went into the playoffs we were not in a good position. The regular season was good for us. With the addition of Jake and Justin we were playing well and had several power hitters on the team. But when it came to the playoffs the same stuff hurt us. And that is not hitting when it mattered. We took an early exit to the playoffs, before we had a chance to face Kelly Stewarts team. After the end of the season we found out that both Ben and Bryce, who we thought would be coming back, both got jobs and had to leave Pullman.

We are going to have a hard time replacing those guys. Bryce has been our second baseman and lead off hitter for several seasons. Ben's power and good fielding will also be missed. We had to pick up a couple of guys in the off season. We found Brandon Koe, Kurt Thacher, and Mike Dowling. With those guys we are looking pretty good coming into the Spring 2007 season.

The season went okay for the Nadirs this year as both Kurt Thatcher and Jake Taylor broke the single season homerun records. We made it two rounds into the playoffs before being knocked off. The team at times shows its power and base hitting skills but many times we should our inability to get timely hits. This was the final season for both Kurt and Jake meaning we are losing two of our biggest power hitters. Going into the Fall season we will be picking up a couple players. Two of them played some summer ball with great success.

Starting with the Fall of 2007 IM sport decided to make all teams go to the playoffs no matter of their record. The difference also went into the regular season. Instead of declaring whether you wanted to play Comp or Rec league to start the season, your record would indicate where they were going to place you on the playoff brackets. We ended up playing in the Lower Comp bracket. We wanted the upper bracket, but our record didn't look so hot. We picked up a couple players in the playoffs including Mike Heston and Charles Shawley. Both players helped us move through the playoff brackets. We won the first three games by a combined score of 54 to 18. But in the finals our bats cooled down and we were not able to get some of the timely hitting that we needed to in order to secure our championship.

Coming into the Spring of 2008 IM sports is keeping the playoff system. I like it better. In the past couple seasons many teams played Rec. Very few played in the Comp bracket. So the Comp playoff bracket would have about three games, and the Rec brackets would have around eight games. Now it is more balanced. It also keeps teams from sandbagging.

Bryce Cuello is back on the team after coming back to the area. We also kept Mike Heston and Charles Shawley on the team we have a solid team. Plus we also picked up another outfielder and big hitter in Ryan Smaha. Our team that went to the finals in the playoffs last season is still together and we added a leadoff hitter in Bryce Cuello after the loss of both Michael Bryant and Brandon Koe to graduation. Adding Charles Shawley and Ryan Smaha to the line up gives a lot more power than we lost when Nick Barry and Jake Taylor both left the team. Mike Heston adds more to our lineup with consistent high-average hitting and great pitching abilities. We are looking to be wearing championship tee-shirts by the end of this season.

The Spring of 2008 season looked to be a good one. We ended the regular season with a 5 - 1 record outscoring our opponents 54 to 24. But in the first game of the playoffs we were not able to get a couple timely hits, and we ended up losing the game by two runs.

We enter the Fall of 2008 season with a much different look. Bryce Cuello and Taj Mahon-Haft have both graduated and left WSU after 7 seasons with the Nadirs. Phil Gruen needs to take the season off. Phil's loss will be hard to fill as he won the triple crown last season and usually wins the Thumper and MVP awards. Jered Kumm has moved on to play with some of his friends, and Peter Schatzer will only be able to play one of the three weeks. That gutted the whole outfield plus we lost Mike Heston to a heavy work load.

This season's rookie class will rival that of Fall of 2001 when we added nine new players. We are adding seven new members to the team. Rookie of the Year competition should be pretty interesting. The new players are: Alex Jarvis, Connor Wildey, Derek Jordan, Derek Lautenschlager, Matt Kline, Mike Goularte, Steven Isaac. This is a big rebuilding phase, but the new players should have several years at WSU meaning we can gel as a team and bring a lot of competition to the IM ranks.

We had a .500 regular season in the Fall of 2008. It wasn't the strongest, but this is a rebuilding time for the team. Chad Begay was hitting the ball very strong and was a great asset on the field. That lead us to the Spring of 2009. We lost Matt Kline but added three new players Nate Bennett, Pete Lestelle, and Brad Neubauer. We also saw the return of Mike Heston in the playoffs. Unlike many years past we have been fielding only 9 players on the field for many games which can help explain our disappointing 1 and 5 regular season schedule.

The Cougar Country Nadirs are reloaded and looking to compete for the championship this season. Several new players have been added to the roster who have a lot of baseball and softball experience.
